Java Shadow Theatre marionettes at the Museum of Oriental Art - Ca' Pesaro in Venice
On display in the thirteenth room of the museum are marionettes from the Java Shadow Theatre (Wayang Kulit). These Wayang Kulit marionettes are made from leather from the skin of water buffalo, sculpted, painted and gilded.
Among the marionettes on display are tempting demons or nobles recognisable by their nose which is straight.
The theatrical performances, which could last an entire night, were accompanied by an orchestra to the rhythm of which the marionette artists gave life to the characters in plays of a religious nature and whose subjects were mainly taken from Indian epic poems including the Mahabharata, the Great War of the Bharata, or the Ramayana, The Gesture of Rama, one of the two Sanskrit mythological epics.
