One of the largest rooms in the Museum of Oriental Art features a carrier chair for a Japanese lady from the late Eighteenth century.

Its exterior decoration is extremely meticulous with lacquered wood, the use of gold leaf and incised copper with geometric and floral motifs.

All the Japanese refinement is also present inside the sedan chair with painted paintings on silk for the lady's viewing pleasure.

In the same room is a magnificent Chinese lacquered folding screen in the Coromandel style (East Coast of India) and decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl, turtle shells, and gold.

This screen is articulated in twelve flaps, each flap consisting of two panels joined by a bamboo rod acting as a pivot.

This folding screen is above all a work of art representing a cortege of Chinese dignitaries on horseback hunting.

We can see on the left a first group of persons surrounded by long canvases acting as a screen while the guests are seated on a large red carpet.

A musician plays a stringed instrument while a young woman serves tea to two men.

Next to them, on an elaborate carpet, a man is courting a young woman who is holding his arm.

Half reclining and as if hidden beneath the fabric of the screen, a couple watch young women dancing.

On the right, two women and children approach the canvas screen behind which stands the second group of party characters.

There is eating, smoking, dancing, the atmosphere here seems distinctly freer than in the left-hand part of the work.

Japanese folding screen, Summer Festival
The summer festival takes place on the water, the figures are spread over four boats.

The first still has its gangway and we can see the figures carrying a long box.

A musician (or musician) sits in the centre of the boat and at its bow are three men and a child.

A smaller boat is moving towards the larger boat, presumably to bring the two adults and two children inside.

The larger central boat shows several persons deep in conversation while two rascals watch the passengers from atop the roof that covers the boat and another half shirtless figure lying on the same roof is smoking a pipe.

At the front of the boat, a young woman picks up a tray presented to her by one of the occupants of the fourth boat.

On this last boat, eating and drinking, we see a man cleaning a tray by dipping it in river water while behind him a man and a child prepare food.

On the roof of this boat, one person combing another while a third, completely lying on the roof and with his head covered by a hat is clearly sleeping.
