Felipe Baeza Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
“Wayward” “As Bare as open flesh” “Encuentro Magico” “Fragments” “Don't draw attention to yourself” “Emerging in difference” “Por caminos ignorandos”
Felipe Baeza was born in 1987 in Mexico City; he lives and works in New York. His works are exhibited in La Corderie at the Arsenal in Venice.
“I open myself against my will by dreaming of other planets. I dream of other ways of looking at this life.”
These words of the Mexican artist refer to his paintings that combine collage, various materials, and incision to obtain a very material two-dimensional work.
Baeza's paintings present “his dreams of other planets and other ways of looking at life” in the form of bodies undergoing transformation, half-human, half-plant, in:
“Emerging in difference” where the lower limbs have turned into five thorny branches, the poetry of “As Bare as open flesh”, and the eroticism of “Por caminos ignorandos” where a vast network of branches emerging from the head invades the space to the ground to reach and nourish the greedy mouths of two men buried up to the shoulders.
Note the artist's elegant imaginary self-portraits, including:
“Don't draw attention to yourself you're already...”, a variegated, athletic and vulnerable character stands out against a predominantly pink background.
“Wayward” represents the sculptural body of a spirited dancer, whose bust, arms and head radiate bright red flames.
