Rosana Paulino “Carapace of Protection” “Jatoba” “Senhora das Plantas” “Wet Nurse” “Tecelas” “Ninfa” Venice Biennale Art Exhibition

Rosana Paulino was born in 1967 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she lives and works. His works are exhibited at the Corderie of the Arsenal in Venice.

The Brazilian artist presents various aspects of female servitude inherited from slavery through her drawings painted in watercolour, acrylic or pastel.

The series of “Carapace of Protection” made in 2004 presents sketches of female bodies more or less wrapped in a protective cocoon, a woman's chrysalis, hoping that she will not suffer the injustices inherited from the past.

The “Wet Nurses” of 2005, are drawings of breasts painted in watercolour, with their network of canals leading to the nipple from which drops of milk, and blood, come out to feed the children of the masters.

The “Jatoba series” made in 2019 represent hybrid creatures, well-rooted half-plant women who grow branches, leaves, and other plants, and the “Senhora das Plantas” from 2015 are potent sources of life.

They are beautiful and generous like the protective deities revered by the indigenous peoples who lived in harmony with nature.
