Gloria Cabral, Sammy Baloji “Debris of History, Matters of Memory” Venice International Architecture Biennale
The link between Brumadinho in Brazil and Katanga in Congo consists of social scars and polluted landscapes created by global capitalism. Two places separated by an ocean but united in the joint work of Gloria Cabral and Sammy Baloji.
Together, they created a structure made of construction debris and bricks made from mining waste.
This large panel features ornamental patterns reminiscent of the architectural textiles of the Kingdom of Congo but also those of the Brazilian natives.
This brick tapestry and its patterns highlight the value of debris and the potential of patterns to form architectural structures for a reinvented future.
